This is a cartoon of a French solider from the Vietnam wa. Tensions first began to arise in Vietnam when the French would not give up their colonial power. over the years France had been restricting the Vietnamese's freedoms, which was what really lead to the rise of Ho Chi Minh. he had created a communist party and when France regained control of the Southern cities he vowed to not let go of the North.

This is a portrait of Ho Chi Minh, th eleader of the Vietcong because of his communist ideals he forced the U.S. to join the war in 1950 5 years after the war had begun. They were only supplying financial aid at this time and the main reason for doing this was because Ho was communist. In 1954 France surrendered at Dien Bien Phu even with all of the support they were given.
This is a video of the USS maddox. In 1964 the American destroyer the USS Maddox was fired upon by a Vietnamese patrol boat. Then Johnson was granted the Tonkin Gulf Resolution by Congress. Basically giving Johnson the ability to use whatever force he believed to be necessary. by 19967 there were 500,000 troops in Vietnam

January 30 1968. The Tet offensive was the climax of the war. it was surprise attack that the Vietcong issued during an agreed upon truce. The Vietcong attacked 100 towns and 12 air bases all at the same time. Even though the VC suffered more deaths the changed the minds of many Americans back home.
